This wasn't a big riding day, but it was a big travelling day. We left Boston in the afternoon with two bike boxes...
...and arrived about 12 hours later in in Marseille (via Paris) with two bike boxes! First step, success!
About four hours after that, with much cursing and hair rending and furrowed eyebrows, we got the bikes assembled. You can see who did the dirty work.
Somehow Arah's chain had gotten fouled in transit, and after much work on the Gordian knot we just took the chain apart and reassembled it. Hopefully it will hold up!
The sky was looking ominous, so we hopped on our bikes and biked a mile over the highway via a cloverleaf with a "no bikes" sign to the train station.
We waited for the next direct train to Montpellier (trying to stay awake) and by 6:30 pm we were rolling up to our first hotel, the Palais de Rois de Aragon, a 15th cen. building with simple, quiet rooms.
We headed out to try to stay awake and find some dinner. Montpellier is a university town, so there were lots of busy places open, even though it was May 1, Workers Day (when no one works, of course, said our host).
We wound up at the Cafe Des Arts, a busy and serviceable place in a small square. Ravenous from our long ride, we ordered from the Plats du jour. Eric had... wait for it... DUCK BREAST!
And I had steak and potatoes. Eric finished up with a pretty pannacotta - garnished with a husk cherry!
We did have some comments last time from our fan that perhaps we posted too many pictures of what we were eating. We will accept all comments, whether via blogger or email about whether we should show the same amount, more, or fewer pictures of food. Remember we are cycling, so are obsessed with food, but realize that the reader may not be.
Anyway, after dinner we headed back to the Palace for some shut-eye. Tomorrow the cycling starts in earnest!
