SP leaves us and we head into the heart of the Schwartzwald (Black Forest), in search of candy houses and old women in shoes…
After putting our Special Package back on the train for Munich, we start the morning on a scenic train put putting up to Feldberg, avoiding a monster climb.
A sure clue that the Black Forest is ahead…
As we climb, the Schwartzwald closes in - a few shots of black forest scenery (and Eric’s back)
My new favorite German word - means “road pain” (bad pavement ahead)
Submitting our highest point of the trip - 3600 feet.
At our lunch stop, I also pick up a new pair of bike gloves and decide it’s time, after 18 years, to throw out the old ones.
This is there first part of my awesome 80s cycling outfit to say Auf Weidershein
Things spotted in the Black Forest:
Wild strawberries
A total Grimm brothers’ witch house
A picnic table with beer bottle decor
We arrive at our destination, Villingen (of Villingen-Schwenningen). It proves to be a pleasant small walled town with a few sights, like its Munster with mismatched spires.
New, but nice doors, which, unfortunately are closed. No Munster for us!
Four intact city gates
Hmmm. Guess this is defensive design?
And some nice old buildings with interesting flourishes
We stop in the market to load up our dwindling picnic supplies and find some retro food items
Though we’re there to pick up fruit and veg, our eyes are drawn to the chips section of course.
Now I know how to say mustard!
Though I’m curious, we resist the temptation to find out…
Even better than France’s plain old bacon flavored?
At the checkout “impulse buy” section - oatmeal-carton-sized containers of cigarettes. Yikes!
A happy return to pizza and salad for dinner.
