And it’s Eric’s birthday! We’ll celebrate today with a long ride and big climb, and tomorrow with a rest day.
We set off for one more visit to the coast.
hanks to Phyllis’s generosity and the bounty of her garden, we have a great picnic with fresh cherries, arugula and snow peas from the garden.
All over we see these sound stone walls - making terraces, steering canals, etc. Phyllis explained that Roman soldiers built them after invading the area and once the locals gave up, the soldiers were put to work piling up stones, of which Provence has a bounty…
And just in case you were worried that we left poppy country…
A long long climb over this ridge and then down down down into Cassis. We head to our B&B to recover first.
An evening stroll around Cassis, which has very shiny worn stone streets
The cliffs along the sea, and the castle remains
View back to town
Carving on the lighthouse
Lots of sea-related art
Doraud (Dorado) for A, purportedly caught that day…
And more duck breast for E!
On the walk home, Cassis castle (now a hotel) lit up and floating above the port.
