One of our most gorgeous rides…
The first thing we see leaving town is this place. Eric is surprised that I haven’t booked it.
First stop Monaco
An actual historic site (or maybe it’s an Armani store)
The Grand Prix course is still set up… I’m getting ready to run it
The casino
Alternative transportation in Monaco
Round the corner to an even swankier town
Old ramparts
And more yachts
We decide to ride around Cap Ferrat, which turns our to be 99% super exclusive gated megamansions and no views except for our lunch spot – the lighthouse at the very end.
With some great views
And connects to a walking path around the Cape
Around the next corner (and a few cruise ships) is Nice!
A view down into Nice
After parking at the hotel, we go out for a wander. First, around Nice’s long stony beach/bay, where we see more tourists than we’ve seen in the whole trip. Including these folks gamely trying to enjoy the beach sports (even though it’s 55 degrees.)
At least France attempts bike lanes, even if the drivers ignore them!
An indication that we might get some variety of cuisine here…
Notre Dame (De Nice)
Nice has some really nice grand hotels and buildings
The Dakota, Nice style
AHHHHHH! LET’S GET OUT OF HERE!
Heading into Vieux Nice (old town) - more narrow alleys
Ducked into a free city museum, housed in a mildly interesting old palazzo (guess we’re in palais territory now) which turned out to house an interesting collection of old musical instruments – following this are a number of mystery instruments for you…
Also, finally got these weird askew doors explained. They were invented in Italy and were meant to reduce wear and tear on the carpets. You can thank me later trivia team.
The Hurdy Gurdy
The Serpent - probably sounded terrible, but looked cool!
Viola d'amore - hard to see but has a second set of strings which aren’t bowed but resonate when the others are. Apparently makes a sound like the human voice.
“Pocket violin” - comes in handy in those emergency quartet situations.
Prehistoric clarinet (this one’s for you Tami!)
Oggi porchetta! Sorry squeamish folk - the old town is full of butchers and charcruteriers and whatnot. We go halal (and cheap) for dinner - kebabs.
