Another crazy hot day… It finally occurs to us to look at the weather and we discover that there’s been a heat wave across France. Today will be 94 so we decide to take it slow.
Gelato is a big part of the day - here pear and apple for E, passion fruit and the second best raspberry ever for A
We head out late to see the sights – the famous (in a French nursery song) Avignon bridge
With Mt. Ventoux
We have discovered that lunches are the good deal in France, so try a place recommended by our B&B and finally have a meal worth blogging about.
For E a starter of rolled coppa with harissa mayo
And chicken with Thai curry artfully presented - some spice tastes great after so long without!
Local specialty bacala with babganoushy stuff for A. Tasty but mushy.
All other molten chocolate cakes in the world must bow down to this one, the most incredible chocolate creation ever conceived. No exaggeration.
Then we wander - slowly - around town.
Inside Avignon’s cathedral a nice nun decides to let us through a secret door where we get to see the grave and treasures of the first Avignon pope, John XXII
Church doors
And we wrap up the day with the Papal Palace, Avignon’s greatest hit. It’s great, and takes us 4 houses and into the evening.
From the highest point
A few things spied from the top - monastery
Tower of Philip the Fair across the river
There’s a good exhibit of four women artists - the modern works are very interesting in this setting.
One of Louise Bourgeois’ mothers looks like a problem for the exterminator in the huge conclave hall.
Boatel picnic dinner to end the visit. And hope for cooler temps tomorrow!
Avignon seems to be the place where they test new chip flavors. We find many - brief photo essay of a few –
View of the Rhone at night
