Now I could complain about waking up to our first day after the Mistral to rain, but I won’t since in nine weeks of biking this is only our second day of riding in the rain. Nonetheless, this was the view.
We stop at the great church and monastery of Cluny, which is a disappointment to me (sorry mom) because it’s 95% gone. In this diorama, the megachurch at its largest. All that’s left is the ruins of the darker section on the far right.
In this display, they show a rendering of the great church on the screen, and what’s left today - just the massive column bases.
Blandly restored outer walls, with the two remaining great church spires in the background.
Cluny has great importance in the history of the catholic church. It’s heyday was the 10th to 15th centuries. This altar base is all that’s left from the original church of 941.
After Cluny we head to Malay, which is so small and sight-free that it seems to have eluded the English-language internet. We hang out at the hotel drying out and watching day 1 of the Tour de France (next trip - Corsica!)
