As you may know, Lyon is known as the culinary capital of France. Of course this was an extremely exciting prospect for us, until we did some reading and menu gazing and discovered the base of Lyonnaise cuisine is… offal. Now I’m not being judgmental here, I know the fifth quarter, everything but the oink or whatever is all the rage, it’s just not our thing. The menus of Lyon’s bouchons (traditional restaurants, means wine cork) are stacked with blood sausage and head cheese and tripe and trotters.
So, here’s what we did eat in Lyon. Skip ahead to the next entry if you’re offended by people being too wimpy to experience the local flavors.
In suburban Lyon we ride past a KFC and Eric decides that stopping for a late lunch is a fine idea. I am extremely grouchy and judgmental about this.
Extremely judgmental
For dinner, after looking at the menu at the famous Bouchon next to our hotel and realizing that the most appetizing thing on the menu - frogs legs - were special order only, we hunt down an Asian restaurant. First in 9 weeks.
Around Asia on an apps platter - Vietnamese rolls, Shu mai and samosas.
And Vietnamese noodle bowls, spicy and SO GOOD!
Breakfast of champions. I break down and hunt down a little (actually a grande) taste of home.
Lunch: kebabs, made of chicken and really good!
For our second night’s dinner we finally decide we must try a Bouchon, so we wander the old town, and encouraged by Holly’s recommendation and the mesmerizing cannibalistic pig art adorning the window, we try L'Ampityrion.
For me, a salad lyonnaise - escarole, lardons and a poached egg
And a slice of onion tart with more of that yummy mustard dressing.
Eric opts for the four-courser - starting with this really awful-looking, but quite tasty Lyonnaise toad in a hole. Hearty sausage with red wine sauce in brioche.
Followed by steak au poivre and potatoes dauphine
Then fromage blanc with fruits rouge
And finally, creme caramel. Whew. Ready to get back on the bikes tomorrow!
