But on the train. Our first itinerary change. We scrap the plan to ride over the Appenines (4500 foot climb no thanks) and train it out of Tuscany and to Bologna.
Today we have one of those blue moon travel adventures. We decide to make our way up to E’s favorite winery, which is 12km (and 1200 feet up) from Lucca.
The office
Oh yeah, everyone has a leg and a deli slicer in their kitchen here…
Then a tour of the cellars, and finally inside for a tasting.
Their incredible kitchen “renovated” in the 18th century
The stove setup
And their fridge!
They invite us to stay for lunch, so Eric dives in to help. Turns out the husband is in energy efficiency (with the leading company that makes doors to retrofit refrigerator cases for grocery stores, and works with several BBC partners in case any EERE folks are reading…) so we had a great conversation about shared savings and simple paybacks.
Addled by hospitality, we buy a couple of bottles. This should work well with our paniers… This is us waiting for the bus back to Lucca. After waiting 45 mins we realize it ain’t coming, and shell out for a taxi so we don’t miss our train.
Off we go to Bologna on TrenItalia. Riding the rails with our bikes
We assume the bikes ride like this.
No no, like this…
Aha! Third time’s a charm.
And classily drinking our special bottle of wine with a hotel room picnic.
