And all uphill… Also, we discover the armpit of France – the trans-Provence highway.
Even the armpit has a few interesting sights. A llama standing by the side of the road (no picture) and this historic looking complex.
Turns out that some important WWII stuff happened around here, a fitting sight for the anniversary of D-Day.
In Villacroix we happen upon this weird and wonderful little “Park of the Grottoes” with caves where troglodytes (!!) lived.
View down from the grottos, which are closed of course…
View back down to Aups – just starting a grueling climb over that mountain and down to the gorge and lake. Best thing about this place is that it’s pronounced “Oops”
After an endless climb (20 miles, of which I walk the last 2) we arrive in Les Salle sur Verdon, a sleepy tourist town near the south entrance to the gorge.
A swim in the brisk waters of le lac – still in quiet pre-tourist mode
A view of what we have in store for tomorrow…
