A beautiful ride today! We followed a separated bike path all the way around Lake Iseo. It must have been the old road and it followed the cliffs, sometimes going through hand-cut tunnels.
We stopped for our picnic just before leaving the lake, and besides some very persistent ducks, had a peaceful lunch.
We could look across to Mont Isole, Europe's tallest lake island. Had we more time and clearer skies, we would have taken a ferry out there, explored the 11 no-car hamlets and climbed to the church on top.
But no, we were off on quiet country roads all the way to Brescia. Great route Eric!
Here's a hint of what Brescia has to offer - for the next post.
After checking in at La Casa di Daniele and cleaning up we wandered and eventually found our fabulous dinner spot, Osteria del Salvio. We had been discussing the fact that there's no need to go nouveau with Italian cuisine because the classics are the best, but this restaurant proved us wrong. The young chef had some interesting versions of Brescian classics as well as some dishes we'd never seen. In addition it was cozy and very friendly.
The house appetizer platter - fennel salad, cured ham, cured beef, local cheese, fried polenta with gorgonzola cream, Italian spanokopita, and refreshing kiwi/ginger/pear juice.
Closeup of fried sage leaf.
Spaghettoni with cinghiale (wild boar) ragu for E.
And I couldn't decide so they kindly gave me a half-and-half: spaghettoni with burrata and black truffles, and wild spinach malifatti with herb cream and caramelized hazelnuts.
Yum yum yum. We raced home to review this hidden gem and rest up for our rest day tomorrow!
