Into the woods and to our first cute Bavarian village - famous for it’s castle where Richard the Lionheart was held prisoner in 1190.
We have a beautiful ride through what we assume is the Black Forest (but turns out not to be)
A few action shots
We finally pull into Annweiler-am-Trifels and the Gasthaus Pension Richard Lowenherz. This Lowenherz fellow is mentioned all over town - must be a famous dude from Annweiler?
We are famished so head into town for lunch. Gyros for E, pile of ham salad for SP.
And I discover Flammkuchen, basically flat bread. This one, with onions and bacon is amusingly listed in the vegetarian section of the menu.
Reverting back to our old ways, E and I decide to climb up to the town’s tower while SP investigates the town.
On the way up we see these interesting limestone formations
At the top is… A semi-ruined castle
The interior has been reconstructed nicely, if inaccurately
A room dedicated to the imprisonment of Richard the Lionheart
Replicas of the treasures of the Holy Roman Empire (the real ones were ferried off to a museum in Vienna)
Aha!! A plaque at the castle finally explains who Richard Lowenherz is.
There are also great views from the top - to the Rhine valley, where we are headed tomorrow and back down to town.
And of other, ruined castles on other hilltops.
After completely circling the cute old part of town without finding it at lunch, SP has discovered the sights and takes us back to them en route to dinner.
Probably Annweiler’s most-oft-taken tourist photo, but you gotta do it.
We decide to go full German for supper. SP gets the meat sampler. She, like her meal, is very happy about the leberknodel.
More pork with bacon in mushroom sauce for A
And of course schnitzel for E (disappointingly not fried)
We have an after-dinner stroll around town
A last view of the castle and to sleep thinking about poor Richard Lowenhertz.
