More action shots. Totally spontaneous!
Which way?
We clean up and head off for some afternoon sightseeing
We start at Speyer’s Dom, or cathedral
The entry is filled with strapping German kings. Very different from the wan suffering saints of Italy
Simple but grand inside
It has a great, cavernous crypt
With eight kings and five bishops and one auxiliary bishop
City hall, or maybe a palace
The remaining medieval gate
Speyer’s other cathedral, which was, unfortunately already closed
LP halo
Unusual statue in the town square
Hey, what’s that hullabaloo going on behind us?
It’s opening night of the Speyer Bretzelfest!!! (Not a typo, that’s how you say it in German.)
Everyone breaks out their dirdels (guess I should learn to spell that!) for the parade
The mayor and her husband, we assume
own elders hurl pretzels to the masses
SP savors her hard-won prize
After the excitement of the bretzelfest we pause at a weinstuben to try the local wines - Riesling and some unpronouncable vintages are the specialties. Then to dinner…
SP and I split creamy pasta with mushrooms
And the now-familiar pork with bacon dish, which I think we’ve finally learned the German word for. First occurrence of spaetzle!
And of course a Frisbee-sized schnitzel for E
