Almost embarrassing to call this a bike day. A quick downhill brings us to Arles…
We decide to buy the combo pass and wind up seeing just about every Roman thing in town.
Sight #1 - the Cryptopoticus, which translates as “long, dark underground tunnel full of Roman detritus and muddy puddles”
Roman theater remains
For scale
Next site - the Saint Trophime cloister. In restauro, but some beautiful carvings are visible
Jesus? Moses? Unsure…
Strange biological stained glass windows
Approaching another site…
Arles’ coliseum – the 20th biggest in Europe.
Constantine’s bath complex (not much left except the under-floor HVAC system and this dome)
And a contemporary art museum housed in the old Knights Templar clubhouse
Our favorite piece - a room full of fans and giant mylar balloons. Whew! 4 sights and one museum…
Wandered out to a little local square to cool off and have dinner. Goat cheese, etc. salad for A
Kebab platter (and pink beer, oops) for E
