Today we left the pancake-flat Po Valley and started to climb into the Dolomites. The ride was beautiful, with some busy truck-filled sections in parts. Unfortunately our only sight along the way, which we had discovered while back in the U.S., Ai Pioppi playground, turned out to be closed on weekdays!
Sigh. After that we began to climb through the Piave river valley, and to see mountains all around us...
Feltre turns out to be a very small version of many other medieval cities. Lots of streets made of stairs and cobblestones
Unfortunately the rain is back. A few minutes into our tour of the old town, the downpour started. We took refuge under the covered porch of City Hall.
With a break in the clouds, we dashed down the galleries
And past fortified pallazzi
to the Duomo. This poor guy's tombstone got stuck up on the wall above the front door.
Inside there wasn't much to admire. There is one dark painting by Tintoretto's son (who apparently did not get the artistic genes.) I liked the pews that are sponsored by families and businesses in town.
We had dinner at the local family-run pizza joint, La Locanda, which was very busy and very fun! we caught the end of the World Cup game before ordering two delicious pizzas.
Burrata, prosciutto and zucchini for A, along with a pint of Lagunitas IPA!!!
Spicy salami for E. With a Budvar (yes Dan, a Budvar!) Oh, and a side of spicy corn nuts.
And then a wander home gazing out and up at the Dolomites.
Now is the time to mention that we saw some disturbing signs today that we are leaving Italy proper and entering GermItalia. The Piazzas are also called Platz, 3/5 of the beers at dinner were German, and sachertorte is on the menu everywhere. I fear that there may be less gelato and more schnitzel in our future...
