Hiking the Calanques
So for Eric’s bday (and our union-mandated rest day) do we sit on the awesome deck of our B&B and do this all day?
And enjoy this? No, we do not. Instead we take a 5 hour hike around the calanques (creeks), which are inlets carved into the seashore by ancient rivers. There are many of them, all the way from Cassis to Marseilles. We decide to see the first three.
Calanque 1 comes quickly and is just a small marina surrounded by bluffs. Ho hum.
We leave C1 to head out around a long point. That’s me staring longingly back toward our hotel…
On the way around the point we see some old ruins of WWII (or maybe WWI) defenses
Place for a gun. Not too bad a posting I guess.
A sheer drop between the cliffs. And a strange two lines between them. It’s…
Some daredevils setting up to slackline over it! We don’t stay to see.
Off we go to find Calanque 2
Calanque 2 is amazing! Sheer cliffs, sand…
And crazy clear water with a busy beach… But few swimmers (we find out why later - brrrr!)
View back to C2
After another hour up and up we finally get a look at Calanque 3 – more dramatic cliffs than the others.
And a beach with gorgeous water way way down - we decide we can’t make the hike this time…
Back to C2 for a late lunch and a dip in the Med. Then back to the B&B to so it on the deck, have some of our Chateau Thuerry and do some trip planning.
We end the day with a nice birthday dinner down by the harbor. Warm goat cheese salad for A
And Cassis caught cuttlefish (kind of like squid nuggets… )
For E, Italian platter (with burrata!) to start
And more duck breast – three in a row! - for E
And a birthday glacier for everyone! Coconut and praline for the actual birthday boy and pink grapefruit and passion fruit for me.
