Off to France!
We wake up recovered and ready to head to France, but not before stopping in the border town of Ventimiglia for one last Italian meal…
Homemade penne amatriciana for A
Unfortunately no one mentions that the portions are to share, so ravioli arrabiata for Eric.
A big moment. 1400 km / 870 miles logged in Italy. Eric takes this moment to note that we are lagging behind our plans and will have to “step it up” for the rest of our trip.
Defunct pre-EU border crossing.
After finding our hotel, and dropping bikes and bags, we decide to brave the clouds and take a walk around town.
Here’s one for CBI. Apartment energy labels - as designed AND as operated. And here, unlike Italy, they actually report the #s.
Menton’s city hall
Hmm… Interesting note.
Hey! France has medieval hill towns as well..
Getting higher - some views back to the sea
We hike up and up (as usual) to the highest point in town - the old cemetery with stunning views and fantastic monuments
The old ville
Marker for sailors, and several for the TB patients who came to be cured (without success) by the sea air
Back down to Menton’s harbor for a grey walk
St. Michael, Menton’s patron, guards the town
And this guy halfheartedly guarding this brigantine in the harbor.
Not only can we not afford to eat out in Menton, but every restaurant in our neighborhood is closed, and then it starts to rain, so kebab in a box, babganoush (“caviar d'aubergine”) and beers for a hotel picnic dinner.
