This starts the “Roman road” are of Provence, along with dry, rocky and hot days… Up and over the Alpilles to start.
First stop Glenum, a large Roman ruin outside Saint-Remy de Provence
Dedications to Hercules outside his temple
We arrive at the the gates of old Les Baux - that’s our hotel room, top right. Great hotel!
We had been told that Les Baux was jammed, and indeed, here is town at 4pm…
And after 6pm! Suggest arriving late and staying over.
Hmm… What are they shooting?
Replicas of castle-storming equipment. Very evocative if say, one were reading Game of Thrones…
The upper keep
Steps to the top. This probably would not fly in our liability-rich culture!
For scale – and why this was a naturally fortified spot
View back down to “new” Les Baux
The rocks are filled with fossils – tons of scallop shells
Dinner time - our hotel’s restaurant is the only game in town, as all the others don’t open for dinner until July. A massive Cesar to start.
Serious lack of duck in this town. Eric makes do with le boeuf (called “faux filet” - must look that up)
Pasta with 2-way salmon for me. One of my favorite new French dishes
A few shots of Les Baux at night
Night art exhibit with eerie animals projected all over town
