Finally we find the Riviera the we heard about – and a break from hill towns!
Almost immediately today looks better than yesterday - we find the seaside and get some breakfast and caffeine. The day’s ride is all undulating seaside.
Suddenly the scenery changes - the rocks are red and much more dramatic, and the road hugs the seacoast, about 200 feet up from the water
Looking away from the sea
We find a lunch spot with great views
A few shots from the approach to Frejus
Eric in port, near our hotel.
The Med is surprisingly clear
Odd Dr Seuss building
Villa envy
We check into our hotel at the far end of town in the Port of Frejus. Frejus is one long bay with nice sandy beaches, an unbroken line of restaurants, bars and ticky-tacky shops lining the boardwalk and lots of condos. It’s actually quite pleasant and low-key compared to the other towns along the Riviera.
After a restorative gelato (Salted caramel and Bounty (the candy, not the paper towel) for E, grapefruit and passion fruit (HOORAY!!!) for A) we head off for a long wander down the beach, into town…
And then a walk up to and around old Frejus. This is the cathedral - has a 6th century baptismal font, which is closed.
Town hall
Amazing door on an unamazing building.
Mezzo mezzo (half pizza / half salad - all good idea) for dinner. First pizza since Italy, with predictable results. I accidentally eat a whole pile of gizzards thinking they are some kind of exotic French mushroom. Sad.
And a sunset wander through a park and back through the marina
One working boat amongst the yachts
Started our rest day with a breakfast picnic on the beach. We did do other things besides eat (errands, laundry, wander) but didn’t take any photos!
Figured out a trick to eating out in France – lunch! Ate a great lunch at Least Provencal in the port. Delicious and really friendly owners.
Roast chicken with bulgur, chickpeas and carrots, with a starter of gazpacho and smoked salmon and strawberries melba to finish for A.
Good people watching too - there was a grande dame next to us putting away an enormous bloody steak and a whole shinbone full of marrow and no less than three dogs in the restaurant.
More duck for Eric - with red currant sauce, a big salad to start and lemon and red currant sorbet for dessert.
Spent the rest of the afternoon on the beach and wandering, resting up for a long ride the next day.
