Sorry, lots of photos. And our hardest ride to date!
And probably our most scenic route to date
I’m going to need my bike safety necklace (thanks MOJO!)
A random roadside Etruscan archeological site
Yikes!
Finally gave up and went the Lance Armstrong route. Turns out a pre-climb coffee really helps!
This town likes its music.
We make it, and arrive through the Porto Romana
The D&D shop?
Fiat frenzy. Old…
And new
Night shot of the campo and palazza del popolo
First stop gelato - chocolate and coffee, tangerine and blackberry.
And a picnic lunch in Il Campo - the towns famous main square (Google Siena Palio)
Little exits all around
A family fun ride…
View of the Campo from the bell tower
We find our hotel down this street - wait a second, is there ANOTHER medieval festival going on!?
First things first … To the bike store for chain oil and more tubes
A night view of palazzorama piazza
We woke up early to the sound of drumming. Turns out we were in the neighborhood of the geese (picture is of the neighborhoods and their terrifying symbols) who won the Palio last year and were just at the end of a week of drumming and marching and flag waving.
And marching
And flag waving
And drumming!
Another neighborhood’s streetlights. We’ve wandered into dolphin territory!
Oof. Hike up to the duomo. We’ll do that after lunch.
Break for lunch on the hotel deck (these are the roses they had, not lunch)
And of course gelato – coconut and marscapone nutella for E
We spent the afternoon in the duomo complex.
The ceiling is lined by popes. I would want my money back if I was grumpy old Christophorus!
Top of a chapel dome
View to heaven to inspire you during mass
The rose window
Some extra pizazz on the organ
Just one of about 50 marble mosaics on the floor. Siena likes to stress its ties to Rome, thus the ripped off Romulus and Remus symbol
The nave. Hard to capture how ornate it is.
View of the duomo from our deck
View from our deck of San ? dedicated to Saint Catherine, first woman to be canonized and patron of Siena.
The art in Siena is dazzling. So here follows a small sampling to dazzle you.
Siennese are dog folks. Today (we saw hundreds) and apparently through history.
Patron saint of Disney?
Guess teenagers were always teenagers. 19th cen graffiti on the duomo
Funny old fashioned touches on the opera museum door
View from the top of the duomo arch. The Campo and more.
Big day looms… To sleep early worrying about our route.
